The Glendale Raptors came away with an important road win over the Kansas City Blues at Mid American Park in Kansas City, 36 – 0. Coach Bullock of the Raptors was especially pleased with win stating, “We have struggled on the road and to come away with a bonus point win in Kansas City is a big step for us.” The win places some separation for the Raptors from the Blues in the fight for the second seed in the West North Division. The Raptors jumped to a 5 – 0 lead when number seven Brad Winbush scored from a well executed lineout drive on the Blues five meter line. Winbush had a very active day in the seven jumper being involved in numerous attacking forays. Following sustained pressure prop Mike Tafel kicked the first of his three penalty kicks for the afternoon as the Raptors went up 8 – 0. Soon after another successful lineout resulted in wing Mike Pettes unconverted try in the corner. A Blues turnover was converted to counter attack with lock Ryan Chapman diving over for the first of his two trys. Tafel’s penalty kick at the half made it a 21- 0 Raptor lead. The Raptors put a penalty on the board five minutes in. The Blues recovered and began to exert pressure as they got their inside game going, using their big forwards to advantage. A potential try was in front of the post was lost when Raptor full back Dewon Reed intercepted a pass on the five meter line to go ninety-five meters to seal the win. Despite that setback the Blues continued to maintain territory and possession, denying the Raptors the ball. A Blues turnover was again converted into a try as flanker Cory Lambert pounced on a loose ball following a scrum and, after a short break, fed Chapman as the big lock brushed off two potential tacklers to score the final try of the afternoon, 36 -0. |
