Glendale Raptors – 13 Glendale, Colo., June 19 – The Glendale Raptors second taste of international rugby play in less than a month -- this time with the University of Wales, Cardiff – was far more rancid than their earlier game against the Welsh Warriors. The Welsh Warriors defeated the Raptors 28-15 on May 29. In the evening game at Infinity Park here today, Wales got off to a quick start with a try and conversion kick in less than five minutes The Raptors then scored on a penalty kick plus a try and conversion kick to lead briefly, 10-7, at the 20-minute mark. By halftime, however, Wales led 21-10. The Raptors were held to a single three-point penalty kick in the second period. Wales scored a total of six tries and five conversions in the game. The final score was 40-13 in favor the University of Wales. Ed Tellwright scored two tries for Wales and was named player of the match. A referring controversy added a sour note to the game’s outcome. During and following the game, players and officials from the University of Wales contended “poor refereeing did not allow for a flowing game with the official continually stopping the game or awarding seemingly unnecessary penalties.” This led to frustration on both teams resulting in a player from each side receiving 10 minutes in the sin bin. |
