Raptor Men Dominate Kansas City Blues
Ata Malifa put the Glendale men’s side up by seven with a try and conversion to open their game under the lights against the Kansas City Blues. The Blues drew within two five minutes later. Wing Dustin Croy darted into goal on a feed from Max Statler at the 14-minute mark. Malifa’s conversion was good, setting the home team on an eight-try performance and a 45-8 final score.
The Blues drilled a penalty goal at minute 54 for their only other score in the game. Prop Leroy Fifita and inside center Justin Pauga each recorded two tries. Malifa and Clinton Camp also touched down for scores. Malifa recorded five conversion kicks on the evening.
Next weekend Glendale women host Chicago -- one of three teams at 2-2 -- in the team’s final league game at Infinity Park, 2 p.m. The D1 men play an away game versus Boulder at Pleasantview Fields in Boulder, also a 2 p.m. kick. Information: 303-692-5799 or www.glendalerugby.com.

Women’s Offensive Explosion Sinks Ice
Glendale, Colo., Oct. 1– Talk about an icebreaker: The Glendale Women Raptors set off an offensive explosion at Infinity Park here that not only sank the Black Ice but set a stadium scoring record and ranks among the biggest shutouts in U.S. women’s rugby match history. Furthermore Glendale clinched the top CR2 seed to nationals with the 99-0 win.
Coach Lisa Rosen’s Raptors is a defensively well-disciplined team that does not give away penalty kicks and thus scores. Remember the Glendale women took the Capital City Ruggerfest championship match with a 39-0 shutout against the host DC Furies earlier this year. The women’s D1 club is now 5-0 with 25 points, and has scored 296 points while only allowing 32.
Hannah Stolba and Bethany Humphrey each recorded hat tricks as the women scored 15 tries and converted in all but three for the win. Andrea Prusinski and Tyra McGrady ran in a bracket of tries while Jen Montoya, Carol Fabrizio, Gabe Fidelman, Heidi Bauer and Tonya Ansel each grounded in goal.

Glendale Thumps Highlanders
Defending DI club champs the Glendale Raptors demonstrated the reason for their status in a comprehensive victory over cross-town rival Denver Rugby Highlanders at Infinity Park rugby stadium Saturday evening. Over 1,000 spectators were in attendance for the Division I clash in near-perfect fall weather conditions.
Highlanders spent a good portion of the initial stages of the match inside Raptors 22 meter line, but were unable to come away with points as they crossed into goal twice though the Raptors defense denied them groundings. Glendale's lineout play was impeccable, securing their own ball and pilfering most of Highlanders throws.
After a Highlanders missed swipe at goal in the first minute, flyhalf Ata Malifa put his side up by three with a penalty conversion from 35 meters at four ticks as Highlanders were judged to have not released at tackle. The next fifteen minutes featured territorial kicking by Highlanders flyhalf, Leif Gibson, which pinned Glendale deep in their own end, but consummate defense by the home team kept Denver from tallying.
Raptors increased their lead to eight in the 19th minute as their backs shifted ball at speed and second center Christian Sarmento finished in the corner. Glendale upped the margin as Malifa deftly fed onrushing wing Max Stattler back inside and the speedy threequarter crossed and dotted for a Malifa-converted goal and it was 15-0 at 26 minutes.
Glendale had a player shown yellow at the 30 minute mark, but the visitors were unable to capitalize on that advantage though they managed a fair amount of time inside Glendale's 22. Instead it was the formidable Malifa who broke through the defensive wall at Highlanders' 22 meter line and streaked into goal for his own conversion and a 22-0 lead at the 33rd minute.
Gibson slotted a penalty goal at 35 minutes to put Denver on the board and it was 22-3. Sarmento picked up his brace with a well-squibbed boot into the box he was able to snatch at speed and dot for a Malifa-converted goal, and a 29-3 lead as time dwindled in the half.
It was Glendale yet again at the whistle when a Highlander was pinged for grossly inhibiting play and the home side were assessed a penalty try by ref Tim Luscombe. Malifa's conversion brought the score to 36-3 at halftime.
Raptors got on the front foot quickly after the re-start with Statler getting his double after receiving a pop pass from Croy and burning the sideline for fifty to dot for a goal converted by replacement Dan Power, who played once in a non-cap game for the USA, and Glendale increased their lead to forty at minute 43.
Raptors tried again at minute 48 when loosehead Pat Carroll, exhibiting admirable pace in support of a Power break, touched down. Power's conversion took the scoreline to 50-3.
Glendale dotted five more times before the whistle with tries by: Croy, Power, a brace by flanker Brad Winbush, and the final by Farzad Darouian for a resounding 77-3 victory.
Glendale's head coach, Mark Bullock was pleased with his side's opening of their national title defense, "We managed to get on top of the Highlanders in the set piece and really created problems for them at lineout time as both locks, Matt Doubek and Casey Rock were very effective in stealing Highlander lineout ball and winning our own." Bullock was pleased with his forwards' overall play: "We were very strong in the loose. This denied the Highlanders a platform for attack and provided us an opportunity to counter attack which we did quite effectively tonight. "
Next up for Denver Rugby Highlanders is Utah's Provo Steelers, 1pm kick at Infinity Park South while the Raptors play host to KC Blues in the Stadium. Both matches on 10/1.

Raptors Finish 3 – 1 at Aspen Ruggerfest
The Glendale Raptors competed in the Aspen Ruggerfest September 17 and finished the tournament with three wins and a loss in the semi-finals.
The first match of the day at 8:00 AM saw the Raptors dispatch the Albuquerque Aardvarks 39 – 0 in rainy conditions. The field was fully muddied from the previous two days of rain and the play of the over age groups on Thursday and Friday. Despite the conditions the Raptors played running rugby keeping the ball in hand to see flanker Spencer Scott score a pair of trys and single trys from Lock Matt Doubek, flanker Brad Winbush, diminutive scrum half Matt Guest, wing Sam Botkin and fullback Bryan Evans.
Match two was against last year's Champion, The Willing, a touring side from the United Kingdom. The raptors jumped off to a 12 – 3 half time lead with trys to hooker Shae Tamati and wing Tim Callahan. Tamati would not finish the match as he broke his leg prior to the end of the first half. Glendale added two penalties by flyhalf Ata Malifa before The Willing scored two trs for the final 18 – 15 Raptor win.
The third match witnessed the Raptors run away from the Kansas Jayhawks in the second half to record a 24 – 5 victory. The first half was a tight battle with the Raptors leading 7 – 5 on a converted try by center Cristian Sarmento. During the second half the Raptors began to dominate possession as flanker Scott and #8 Clinton Camp, scored converted trys. Malifa closed out the scoring with a penalty kick.
The semifinal match pitted Denver foes the Barbarians and Raptors went up early 11 - 3 on a try by Sarmento and two penalty kicks by Malifa. The Barbarians broke the Raptor defensive line eight minutes prior to halftime to score a converted try under the posts and then came right back to score on a beautifully weighted chip kick that the wing re-gathered to score a second converted try, 11 – 17 at half. The second half saw an evenly contested match with both sides trading penalty kicks resulting in the Barbarians coming out on top 14 – 20.

Glendale DII Women Crush Dallas Diablos for Inaugural League Match Win
Article & Photos By: Eiden Herring
September 17, 2011 – DALLAS – The Glendale Raptors Division II women’s club traveled to Dallas, Texas, for their inaugural fall season competitive league match against the Diablos. While the Raptors’ DII team was active during the spring season, fall rugby season is the women’s division’s competitive season.
Glendale’s first try of the match was scored three minutes in after returning veteran Heidi Bauer took the corner on the Diablos’ defense. Bauer would return to the try zone about 12 minutes later for her second try of the match. New-to-Glendale prop Jen Montoya had several key line breaks and made a 50-meter run into the try zone as well.
Montoya’s try ended the first half of regulation play leaving Glendale with 34 unanswered points on the board. Perhaps the most outstanding performance of the match was that of Katie Janus, who not only scored four tries from the flanker position, but was also key to Glendale’s defense at the tackle contest.
The Diablos were pinned to their side of the pitch for much of the match, but they never gave up. Unfortunately, neither kicking nor crashing seemed to impact the Raptors’ mode of play. The final score was 54-7.
Glendale’s DII team will take to the turf at Infinity Park to face off against Houston on September 24. The DI women will travel to the Motor City on September 24 to face the Detroit women, who are currently ranked No. 2 in the CR2 bracket (Glendale hold the No. 1 position in the CR2 bracket). Both Glendale teams will have their season openers at Infinity Park on October 1.

Glendale Women Defeat Chicago North Shore, Earn Second Bonus Point
Story and Photos By: Eiden Herring
Saturday, September 10, 2011 – CHICAGO – Week two of the competitive fall season found the Glendale Division 1 women in Chicago, Illinois, for a match up against Chicago North Shore. For the second week in a row, the Raptors faced experienced and physical opponents.
Both teams managed to keep each other off the score board, until nearly 14 minutes in, when Glendale was penalized for not releasing the ball in the ruck. North Shore opted to go for post inside of the 22-meter line, and the score was held at 3-0 until the end of the first half.
Chicago and Glendale continued to short-circuit each other’s offense throughout the first portion of the second half, ultimately resulting in much of the match being played near the 50-meter line. The teams appeared to be locked in a stalemate until USA Eagle Pool member, Tyra McGrady, made her first breakaway into the try zone. McGrady, another new face to the Glendale squad, would score a second try only 4 minutes later.
Hannah Stolba’s conversion and an additional try by Andrea Prusinski marked 17 unanswered points within 8 minutes of play. Visibly shocked by the unfolding events, Chicago was not about to give up. Their persistence paid off after nearly seven minutes, when they finally slipped through Glendale’s defense and tried.
The North Shore try could not stop the momentum of the Raptor offense. The remaining regulation time saw tries by Humphrey and Wagner, with another conversion by Stolba. The final score was 29-8, enough to earn Glendale their second bonus point of the season.
Glendale’s Division 1 team was originally slated to have their home opener against St. Louis next weekend. Due to low numbers, St. Louis was forced to forfeit the match. The forfeiture will go down in the books as a 60-0 victory for Glendale, earning them another bonus point. The Division 1 team will now have a weekend to rest before their October 1 match up against hometown rivals, the Black Ice. The match will take place in the stadium at Infinity Park.
Next week also marks the inaugural fall competitive season for Glendale’s Division 2 women’s team. The DII team will travel to Dallas to face the Diablos in their first league match. The Division 2 women will have their home opener on October 1 against the Boulder Babes at Infinity Park.

Glendale Women Defeat Austin, Gain Bonus Point at Season Opener
Photos and article by Eiden Herring
Saturday, September 3, 2011 – Austin, TX – Saturday marked the beginning of the competitive fall season for the Glendale Women's Division I team. They traveled with a squad of 23 to face off against league rivals the Austin Valkyries on their home pitch.
In addition to several high-profile rookies (World Cup captain, Jillion Potter, veteran Eagle Kitt Wagner, and Eagle Pool member Hannah Stolba), the Raptors fielded several returning veterans – including Sara Edwards, Bethany Humphrey and Bethany Wilson (formerly Zick).
While less structured of a performance than Head Coach Lisa Rosen prefers, Glendale led the entire match, with the first try (Edwards) and conversion (Stolba) coming at 5:46 into the first half. Edwards had her second try nearly 30, very physical, minutes later. Additional tries were scored by Fabrizio, Potter and Wilson (2) before the Valkyries were able to make it on the board near the end of the of regulation play.
The Raptors lost a player to injury, and with no substitutes left, ended up playing the last 20 minutes of the match with only 14 on the field. The final score was 37-12, allowing Glendale to capture a bonus point and be ranked at the top of the CR2 table with five points.
The DI Raptors' second league match of the season will take place on September 10 in Chicago against the Chicago North Shore Women. Their first home match will be against St. Louis on September 17 at Infinity Park.
