Glendale DII Women Crush Dallas Diablos for Inaugural League Match Win

Article & Photos By: Eiden Herring

September 17, 2011 – DALLAS – The Glendale Raptors Division II women’s club traveled to Dallas, Texas, for their inaugural fall season competitive league match against the Diablos. While the Raptors’ DII team was active during the spring season, fall rugby season is the women’s division’s competitive season.

Glendale Raptor Women DII vs. Dallas DiablosGlendale’s first try of the match was scored three minutes in after returning veteran Heidi Bauer took the corner on the Diablos’ defense. Bauer would return to the try zone about 12 minutes later for her second try of the match. New-to-Glendale prop Jen Montoya had several key line breaks and made a 50-meter run into the try zone as well.

Montoya’s try ended the first half of regulation play leaving Glendale with 34 unanswered points on the board. Perhaps the most outstanding performance of the match was that of Katie Janus, who not only scored four tries from the flanker position, but was also key to Glendale’s defense at the tackle contest.

The Diablos were pinned to their side of the pitch for much of the match, but they never gave up. Unfortunately, neither kicking nor crashing seemed to impact the Raptors’ mode of play. The final score was 54-7.

Glendale’s DII team will take to the turf at Infinity Park to face off against Houston on September 24. The DI women will travel to the Motor City on September 24 to face the Detroit women, who are currently ranked No. 2 in the CR2 bracket (Glendale hold the No. 1 position in the CR2 bracket). Both Glendale teams will have their season openers at Infinity Park on October 1.
